After conductors allegedly replaced official UPI scanners with personal QR codes, BMTC has decided to overhaul its ticketing system by introducing dynamic QR technology across buses.

The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has taken strict action after a fraud involving bus conductors came to light, triggering a major change in its digital ticketing system. The issue surfaced after conductors were found allegedly swapping official UPI QR scanners with their personal QR codes, diverting passenger payments into private accounts.

Following the incident, three conductors were suspended on Tuesday for misusing the UPI payment system. The conductors reportedly removed the QR codes installed inside buses and showed passengers their own QR codes during ticket collection, leading to financial loss for the transport corporation.

In response, BMTC has decided to replace the existing UPI scanner system currently installed in its buses. The transport body is now preparing to introduce a new technology-based solution using dynamic QR codes to prevent such misuse in the future.

Under the proposed system, sticker-based QR scanners will no longer be displayed inside buses. Instead, scanners will be integrated only into electronic ticketing machines carried by conductors. Once a passenger states the boarding point and destination, the machine will automatically calculate and display the exact fare. Passengers can then scan the dynamic QR code shown on the device and receive their ticket instantly.

The system is also designed to align with the Shakti Scheme. In cases where free travel is applicable, the machine will automatically display a zero-fare ticket, eliminating confusion and misuse.

BMTC officials indicated that the new dynamic QR code system is expected to be rolled out within the next two to three months. The move aims to enhance transparency, protect revenue, and restore commuter trust in digital ticketing.
