Strict checks by BMTC lead to thousands of cases against ticketless passengers, seat violations, and conductors, boosting enforcement across city buses.
In a major enforcement drive to curb ticketless travel and improve discipline on city buses, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) imposed fines on thousands of passengers in January, collecting a total penalty amount of ₹7,05,630.
According to official data released by BMTC, a total of 2,637 passengers were caught travelling without valid tickets during the month. These offenders were penalised, leading to a fine collection of ₹5,85,650 from ticketless travellers alone.
In addition, BMTC officials booked 242 male passengers for occupying seats reserved exclusively for women. Action against this violation resulted in a further collection of ₹24,200 as penalty.
Combining both categories, a total of 2,879 passengers were penalised in January, with the overall fine collection reaching ₹7,05,630.
The enforcement drive also covered lapses by conductors. During inspections, BMTC registered 1,679 cases against conductors for various procedural and operational violations, aiming to strengthen accountability within the system.
