BWSSB plans to roll out a citywide mandate requiring every household to install aerators, aiming to save over 10 crore litres of water daily.
In a major move to tackle Bengaluru’s looming water crisis, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is set to make aerators mandatory for every household. Aerators, small, inexpensive devices fixed to taps, control water flow and significantly reduce wastage.

So far, BWSSB has installed over 15 lakh aerators in apartments and commercial complexes across the city, with another 5 lakh installations planned soon. This initiative is already saving the city nearly 10 crore litres of water every single day.
The new rule will extend to individual homes, making aerator installation compulsory. “Earlier, commercial complexes and apartments resisted the idea. But after we introduced fines, everyone complied and water savings went up drastically,” BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar said.

An aerator brings down water flow from 10 litres per minute to just 3 litres, making it a simple yet powerful solution to prevent wastage. With Bengaluru’s groundwater levels depleting and summer water demand surging every year, this measure could make a major difference.
The mandatory installation drive is expected to roll out soon, with public awareness campaigns and a short grace period before enforcement begins.
