Delhi creator Simridhi Makhija, in Bengaluru for 2 months, embraced Kannada, winning locals’ hearts with her viral video on language and hospitality
Bengaluru has long been a melting pot of cultures, but few newcomers have resonated with the city’s spirit as swiftly as Simridhi Makhija. A resident of Delhi and a content creator by profession, she moved to Bengaluru two months ago and has since captured the admiration of Kannadigas with her reflections on learning the local language.
In a video posted on Instagram, Makhija shared her journey of settling into the city and explained why Kannada has become central to her experience. Initially, she believed her Delhi background meant she could manage without learning the language. Yet, after sixty days in Bengaluru, she realized that Kannada not only makes daily life easier but also strengthens bonds with the people around her.
She recounted a personal story of visiting a hotel in HSR Layout regularly for meals. When the staff noticed her absence for a few days, they expressed concern. Though she explained her busy schedule in English, she wished she could have conveyed it in Kannada, recognizing that speaking the local language is a way of honoring the warmth and hospitality of the community.
Reflecting further, Makhija observed that language controversies are unnecessary. Watching her friends converse in Kannada inspired her to learn, and spending more time with them has helped her pick up the language faster. She expressed eagerness to continue learning and encouraged others to embrace Kannada rather than engage in conflicts over language.
Her candid reflections have since gone viral, drawing widespread appreciation from Kannadigas. Many responded warmly in the comments, praising her openness and respect for their culture.
Makhija’s story underscores how embracing the local language fosters belonging, bridges cultural gaps, and strengthens community ties in a diverse city like Bengaluru.
