Two men posing as police officers carried out a daring daylight robbery at a Byadarahalli residence, threatening a senior citizen couple at knifepoint and fleeing with cash, gold, phones, and CCTV equipment.
In a shocking incident, a gang of at least two robbers disguised in khaki police uniforms looted ₹20 lakh in cash and around 500 grams of gold from the residence of a civil contractor-cum-realtor in Byadarahalli, northwest Bengaluru, on Monday afternoon.
The victims, Hombalegowda and his wife Mangalamma, live with their son and daughter-in-law at BEL Layout. Their two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter was also inside the house at the time of the incident. Police confirmed that no one was physically harmed during the robbery, which lasted nearly 30 minutes.
According to investigators, the crime took place around 2 pm when one of the miscreants, dressed in police uniform, knocked on the door. He introduced himself as a sub-inspector from Yelahanka police station and carried a diary to appear authentic. Moments after gaining entry, another man in similar uniform entered the house.
Without warning, both men pulled out knives and threatened Hombalegowda. When Mangalamma rushed to the hall, she too was held at knifepoint. The robbers gagged the couple by taping their mouths and tied their hands using cloth. The child, who was in another room, was not disturbed.
The accused then searched the house, broke open cupboards, and collected cash and gold jewellery. Before fleeing, they took away the couple’s mobile phones and the CCTV DVR, apparently to erase evidence.
Police revealed that despite being threatened, Mangalamma offered her mangalsutra, but the robbers refused to take it. A case has been registered, and multiple teams have been formed to track down the accused using technical and field investigation methods.
