BMRCL rolls out free bicycle parking at select Purple, Green and Yellow Line stations, while cyclists welcome the move and demand better security and infrastructure across the Metro network.
In a move aimed at promoting cycling as a last-mile connectivity option, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced free bicycle parking at nine selected Metro stations across the Purple, Green and Yellow Lines.
To manage these facilities, BMRCL has floated a tender for parking operations. Interested agencies can submit their bids until February 9, after which an operator will be finalised to oversee the free bicycle parking services at these stations.
Currently, cyclists using Metro station parking pay Re 1 per hour, with a maximum daily charge of Rs 10. Under the new initiative, this fee will be completely waived only at the nine selected stations, while parking charges will continue at all other Metro stations across the city until further notice.
According to BMRCL officials, the stations were chosen based on high cyclist usage. The aim is to ensure maximum benefit for regular commuters and encourage more people to combine cycling with Metro travel, especially for short-distance daily commutes.
While the announcement has been welcomed by the cycling community, many cyclists have flagged serious infrastructure gaps. They have called for dedicated bicycle parking spaces, proper anchoring points, protective shelters and organised layouts at Metro stations.
Security remains a major concern. Cyclists pointed out that the absence of locking facilities, poles or anchoring points makes it difficult to safely park bicycles. Many commuters said they would feel more confident if simple but secure infrastructure was added.
Several cyclists also clarified that parking cost is not the main issue. Many are willing to pay a reasonable fee, provided secure and well-designed parking facilities are available.
