GBA gives 7-day deadline for hostels, PGs & service apartments to enforce fire safety; violators risk license cancellation & sealing of premises
The General Building Authority (GBA) has issued a strict seven-day deadline for service apartments, hostels, and paying guest (PG) accommodations across the city to implement mandatory fire safety measures. The move follows a series of recent fire incidents that have raised alarm over safety standards in shared living spaces.
In its notice, the GBA warned that non-compliance will result in cancellation of licenses and sealing of premises. Municipal corporations have been directed to conduct inspections and ensure adherence to the new rules. Officials emphasized that the directive is aimed at preventing recurrence of tragedies and safeguarding residents in high-density accommodations.
Key Safety Rules Mandated
• Authorized use of LPG and gas connections only
• Complete ban on illegal or unsafe gas cylinders
• Proper ventilation and installation of fire safety equipment
• Electrical safety measures to prevent overloads
• Valid business licenses and registrations for all operators

The GBA’s order comes amid growing concerns about fire hazards in Bengaluru’s rapidly expanding service apartment and PG sector. With thousands of students and professionals relying on such accommodations, authorities say strict enforcement is essential to protect lives.
Municipal corporations have been put on high alert, with instructions to monitor compliance closely and take immediate action against violators. Officials stressed that safety cannot be compromised, especially in facilities housing large numbers of residents.
The directive underscores the city’s commitment to strengthening fire safety standards and ensuring accountability among property owners. As the deadline approaches, operators of service apartments, hostels, and PGs are under pressure to upgrade facilities and meet the mandatory requirements or risk losing their licenses.
