Alphabet plans a 2.4M sq ft office in Bengaluru’s Whitefield, creating 20,000 tech jobs and boosting the city’s economy, real estate, and innovation

Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, is making a major push into India with plans to establish a massive office space in Bengaluru. The expansion comes as rising tariffs, stricter visa rules, and increasing operational costs in the United States prompt global technology firms to diversify operations. India’s skilled workforce, cost advantages, and strong digital ecosystem have positioned the country as a strategic hub for Alphabet’s long-term growth.

Alphabet, which oversees businesses in cloud computing, AI, digital advertising, and advanced research, has faced challenges in the U.S. due to trade policy shifts and immigration restrictions. These constraints have made it harder to recruit and retain international talent, while compliance costs have added further pressure. Against this backdrop, India offers a compelling alternative, with Bengaluru already hosting Alphabet’s largest workforce outside the U.S.

Reports indicate that Alphabet will lease approximately 2.4 million square feet of office space at Alembic City in Whitefield. The campus will consist of three towers, one of which is expected to become operational soon, while the remaining two are scheduled for completion next year. The facility is designed to accommodate more than 20,000 additional employees, significantly scaling Google’s engineering, product development, and research operations in India.

The expansion is expected to generate substantial benefits for Bengaluru. Alphabet currently employs around 14,000 people in India, and the new office will create an estimated 20,000 high-skilled jobs, primarily in technology and engineering. This influx of talent is likely to boost consumer spending, drive economic growth, and increase demand for housing and office spaces, particularly in the city’s tech corridors.

Industry experts note that the move will also encourage infrastructure improvements, including better roads, metro connectivity, and public facilities. The presence of a global technology giant is expected to strengthen Bengaluru’s start-up ecosystem, offering opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship. Additionally, exposure to advanced technologies will enhance skill development and help retain local talent.

Alphabet’s decision underscores India’s growing importance in the global technology landscape. For Bengaluru, the expansion represents not only new jobs but also a chance to reinforce its position as a leading driver of India’s digital economy.
