The second-phase connection between the Tumakuru Road loop and the Baptist Hospital ramp is in its final stages, promising smoother flow toward Mehkri Circle.
The long-pending second phase of the Hebbal flyover expansion is now nearing its final stage, with completion expected by mid-December. The work involves linking the Tumakuru Road loop, located within the tree park near the junction, with the newly built ramp originating from the Baptist Hospital side. Once opened, this new alignment will add more lanes for vehicles coming from the Esteem Mall service road and Tumakuru Road, helping traffic move more smoothly toward Mehkri Circle.
This upgrade is part of a larger effort to ease the severe congestion that has troubled the Hebbal junction for many years, particularly as traffic from Kempegowda International Airport continues to grow. A previous plan to stretch the new ramp up to Esteem Mall for direct airport-side access was considered but later dropped.
In August, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) completed the first phase of the project by connecting the Baptist Hospital ramp to the existing loop carrying vehicles from KR Pura. Traffic police recorded a 20–30% reduction in congestion after this partial opening, offering a temporary breather at one of the city’s busiest gateways.

However, the relief at Hebbal shifted part of the traffic pressure to Mehkri Circle, nearly 3 km away. Because seven major streams of vehicles, including those from the airport, Tumakuru Road, Esteem Mall, and the ring road, converge atop the Hebbal flyover, the corridor remains a major bottleneck. This heavy load ultimately flows into Mehkri Circle, creating another choke point. Officials note that unless downstream bottlenecks are addressed, the improvement at Hebbal will continue to offer only partial relief.
To further ease movement, BDA has planned two additional projects under a comprehensive traffic management strategy for Hebbal. One is a 700-metre flyover that will connect traffic from KR Pura directly to the airport-bound national highway. The second is a unidirectional underpass designed to streamline movement from Tumakuru Road toward Nagawara. Together, these interventions are expected to cost around ₹300 crore, with tendering for the flyover expected soon.
Meanwhile, civic group B-Smile proposed a 2.2-km cut-and-cover tunnel connecting Hebbal to the Veterinary College as another long-term solution, although the idea has not yet been taken forward.
With the second-phase ramp now in its final stretch, commuters can expect some additional relief once the link opens, even as city planners work on parallel projects to ease traffic across the wider corridor.
