Police widen investigation into Confident Group founder Dr CJ Roy’s death, examining mobile data, IT officials’ role, staff statements, bank transactions and forensic reports.

The death of Dr CJ Roy, founder and chairman of the Confident Group, has sent shockwaves across the business community in Bengaluru and beyond. While initial indications point to suicide, the exact reason behind the tragic end remains unclear, prompting police to intensify their investigation on multiple fronts.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the circumstances, police have registered the case as a “suspicious death” and launched a detailed probe. A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) has already visited the spot and collected key material evidence, which is now under technical examination.

IT officials under scanner

At the time Dr Roy took the extreme step, Income Tax (IT) officials were present inside the Confident Group office. In view of this, police have decided to issue notices to the IT officers who were on the premises. Their statements will be recorded to understand what transpired during the interaction and what conversations took place during the questioning.

Statements of office staff

Investigators will also question employees and staff members who were present in the office at the time of the incident. Police are keen to know whether any behavioural changes were noticed in Dr Roy in the days leading up to his death, and if there were visible signs of stress or disturbance.

Focus on mobile phone and call records

One of the most crucial elements of the investigation is Dr Roy’s mobile phone, which has been seized by the police. Officers are analysing Call Detail Records (CDR), WhatsApp messages, emails, and other digital data to determine who he communicated with last and whether any messages point to pressure, fear, or distress. Investigators believe this digital trail could provide vital answers.

Bank transactions to be examined

To rule out financial distress or external pressure, police will also scrutinise Dr Roy’s bank transactions. The focus will be on identifying any unusual financial movements, loan-related stress, or monetary pressure from any individual or institution.

Forensic and medical reports

Police are compiling and analysing fingerprints collected at the scene, eyewitness accounts, post-mortem findings, and the SOCO (Scene of Crime Officer) report. These will be studied together to reconstruct the sequence of events accurately.

FSL report seen as decisive

The pistol used and the ammunition involved have been sent to the FSL, and experts are preparing a detailed technical report. Police say the FSL findings will play a decisive role in determining the next course of legal action.

At the heart of the investigation lies one key question: Was fear linked to the IT proceedings the trigger, or was there pressure from some other unseen source? Officials maintain that only after all forensic, digital, and financial reports are received will the full truth behind Dr CJ Roy’s death emerge.
