The centre, launched by Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, represents a significant boost to India’s semiconductor ecosystem. The Bengaluru unit will contribute to chip design for a range of electronic devices, particularly in the mobile technology segment.
The initiative aligns with the government’s long-term vision of building a complete semiconductor value chain in the country. Alongside design and manufacturing, the focus is shifting toward establishing capabilities in equipment and raw materials, ensuring India plays a central role in the global chip supply network.
India’s electronics industry
India’s electronics industry has witnessed rapid growth, expanding six-fold over the past decade to reach a valuation of Rs 11.5 lakh crore. Exports from the sector have risen eight-fold in the same period, strengthening its position as one of the nation’s key export categories.
The India Semiconductor Mission has already recorded progress, with chip designs developed across 25 institutions. The upcoming phase will concentrate on scaling equipment and material production to sustain advanced chipmaking.
With the new ARM facility, India strengthens its ambition of becoming a global hub for cutting-edge electronics and semiconductor industry and its innovations.
