The Karnataka government has officially notified the final ward-wise reservation roster for the 369 wards spread across Bengaluru's five newly formed municipal corporations. This crucial administrative milestone paves the way for the city's long-delayed civic elections, which have been pending for over four years.

The final notification emerges after authorities thoroughly reviewed public objections to the initial draft list, which was published on January 8 with a public feedback deadline of January 21. In a significant development, the reservation categories for 84 separate wards have been entirely altered from that preliminary draft. These extensive modifications have sparked ongoing debates and raised questions among aspiring local politicians. The sudden shifts in quota allocations could dramatically impact their electoral strategies, ultimately making or breaking their eligibility to contest in their preferred neighbourhoods.

Under the new municipal structure, Bengaluru West Corporation holds the largest share of the city's administrative divisions with 112 wards, and it consequently experienced the highest number of reservation adjustments, affecting 33 wards. This was followed by notable quota revisions in Bengaluru North with 18 wards, Bengaluru South with 14 wards, Bengaluru East with 12 wards, and Bengaluru Central with 7 wards. The final reservations have been systematically allocated among Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes, women, and the general category, adhering to constitutional guidelines and demographic data.

The massive overhaul of the city's civic administration is governed by the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, which effectively dissolved the previous structure to establish five distinct city corporations under the unified umbrella of the Greater Bengaluru Authority. The complex ward delimitation process, which officially concluded late last year, meticulously redrew the municipal map using updated 2023 population projections. This massive geographic restructuring was designed to ensure equitable representation across the rapidly expanding metropolis, targeting a population of approximately 20,000 residents for each individual ward.

With the geographical boundaries firmly established and the reservation matrix legally notified, the stage is set for the announcement of the official polling schedule. Although political concerns persist regarding the newly assigned quotas, the essential administrative groundwork is now complete, bringing Karnataka’s capital closer to reinstating an elected local government.
