Days after her comments on the poor state of Bengaluru’s roads went viral, Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw met Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar at his residence on Monday. The meeting, held on the occasion of Diwali, combined festive greetings with possible serious discussions about the city’s infrastructure and long-term development.

Mazumdar-Shaw, who had recently expressed concern over the condition of Bengaluru’s roads after hosting a guest from China at the Biocon office, had questioned why a global tech capital like Bengaluru struggles with basic civic infrastructure. Her remark, “Why are Bengaluru’s roads so bad?”, sparked widespread debate across social media and civic circles.
Following her public statement, Shaw had offered to fund and develop a few city roads using her own resources, which drew responses from both DCM Shivakumar and Minister M B Patil. Shivakumar had said the government would be happy to allocate certain stretches if she wished to take them up, while Patil suggested that corporate players like Biocon could contribute through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for urban improvement.

The conversation also touched on industrial incentives offered by other states and how Karnataka could remain competitive in attracting investors.
