Over 200 families displaced by a GBA clearance drive in Yelahanka’s Kogilu Layout staged a road protest near Minister Krishna Byregowda’s residence, demanding housing, justice, and immediate rehabilitation.
Tension gripped north Bengaluru after a large-scale eviction drive by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) in Kogilu Layout, Yelahanka, left more than 200 families homeless, triggering emotional scenes and a strong public protest.
The eviction operation began on Saturday early morning, with nine JCB machines deployed to clear over 200 unauthorised houses along Bande Road. Families who had been living in the area for 10 to 15 years were forced out, many managing to save only a few household items before their homes were demolished.

Following the clearance, affected residents, along with support from Dalit organizations, gathered in large numbers and attempted to lay siege to the Kodigehalli residence of area MLA and Revenue Minister Krishna Byregowda. Police blocked the protestors using barricades, forcing them to sit on the road and continue their demonstration.

Raising slogans against the government and the minister, residents demanded his presence at the site. Protesters insisted that alternative housing must be provided, stressing that women, elderly persons, and small children had been pushed onto the streets. Emotional appeals highlighted the hardship faced overnight, with families spending the night in the open amid cold weather, lighting small fires to stay warm.
Several women alleged inhuman treatment during the eviction, stating that belongings, documents, uniforms, and personal items went missing. One law student said her house was razed without any consideration. Widows and single mothers spoke of their helplessness, saying they had no place to go with young children.

Leaders from Bhima Sena echoed the residents’ demands, stating that either homes should be allotted immediately or those responsible should be held accountable. Protesters questioned why officials seek votes during elections but ignore people during crises.
Authorities stated that the land belongs to the Greater Bengaluru Authority, transferred to it in 2016 and later allotted to Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML). Officials alleged that private individuals illegally sold plots on government land, leading to unauthorised construction.
As of now, displaced families remain stranded, insisting they will continue their protest until a concrete rehabilitation plan is announced.
