With a focus on social justice and equality, residents of Kogilu Layout will observe a unique Republic Day celebration aimed at highlighting constitutional values and the voices of the poor.

Residents of Kogilu Layout in Bengaluru are set to mark the 77th Republic Day in a distinctive way by organizing a “Poor People’s Republic Day” celebration at Fakir Colony. The event will be held tomorrow at 11 am and is expected to draw attention at both the local and national levels.

The initiative is being led by local residents under the banner of the #BadavaraKoogu (Voice of the Poor) campaign. Organisers say the objective is to highlight the struggles of the working poor while reaffirming the core values enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

The celebration will take place at Fakir Colony, located within Kogilu Layout, an area that has previously drawn attention for citizen-led movements. Residents believe this event will once again bring the locality into the national spotlight.

According to the organisers, the programme is designed to underline constitutional ideals such as social justice, freedom, equality and fraternity. They say Republic Day should not only be about ceremonial celebrations, but also about reflecting on whether these values are truly reaching the most marginalised sections of society.

The “Poor People’s Republic Day” will be organised with the support of the Dudingeya Janara Vedike (Platform of Working People) along with other progressive organisations. Community members, daily wage workers and activists are expected to participate in the programme.

Residents said the event is a symbolic reminder that the Constitution belongs to every citizen, including those living in informal settlements and working-class colonies. By choosing Fakir Colony as the venue, organisers aim to bring focus to issues faced by the urban poor and to assert their constitutional rights.

The programme will begin at 11 am and will include speeches and community participation centred on constitutional values and social equality.
