With air traffic demand rising, KSIIDC has moved to appoint consultants for a detailed feasibility study of three shortlisted locations on the city’s outskirts to identify the site for Bengaluru’s second airport.
The process to identify Bengaluru’s second airport has taken a key step forward, with the Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (KSIIDC) inviting tenders to appoint consultants for preparing a detailed strategic and technical site feasibility report.
The consultants will study three shortlisted locations on the outskirts of Bengaluru, identified for the proposed greenfield airport, which is planned to meet the city’s rapidly growing air traffic demand.
This move follows a preliminary assessment by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), which shortlisted the three sites as suitable options for developing a new airport. The detailed feasibility report is expected to play a crucial role in the final selection of the airport site.
The urgency of the exercise has increased in the backdrop of Tamil Nadu fast-tracking the construction of a new international airport at Hosur, close to the Karnataka border. The Hosur airport is planned to handle 30 million passengers annually, raising strategic concerns for Bengaluru’s future aviation capacity.
Shortlisted Locations
The three locations identified for further evaluation are:
• Choodahalli on Kanakapura Road
• Somanahalli on Kanakapura Road
• One site on the Nelamangala–Kunigal Road
According to the tender document, the two Kanakapura Road sites are adjacent to each other and have overlapping land parcels. As a result, these sites will need to be assessed both independently and jointly to determine their combined potential.
The document also states that KSIIDC has kept the option open to include an additional site for evaluation during the course of the assignment, subject to mutually agreed timelines and costs.
Scope of the Feasibility Study
The selected consultant will conduct a multi-dimensional assessment covering technical, strategic, operational, environmental and financial aspects of each site.
The study will include a detailed review of AAI’s earlier feasibility assessments, focusing on key physical and infrastructure parameters such as:
• Land size, terrain and zoning
• Climatic conditions
• Availability of power supply
• Water and sewerage infrastructure
• Surrounding population and existing development
• Environmental considerations
• Distance from Bengaluru’s major demand centres
The findings of this comprehensive study will guide the state government in finalising the location for Bengaluru’s second airport, which is expected to play a critical role in supporting the city’s long-term aviation and economic growth.
