Large-scale ward-level roadworks launched as pothole-heavy zones get priority; officials seek contract reforms to improve quality.
The Bengaluru North Corporation has moved into a major repair phase as tenders are floated for extensive ward-level roadworks covering 109 projects. These works are aimed at neighbourhoods that continue to report some of the city’s highest pothole numbers. The corporation also plans to invite tenders for arterial and sub-arterial roads by November 17, marking one of the biggest repair drives this year. The total action plan is valued at ₹238 crore.

Data shared by the authority shows the corporation split into two zones. Between April and November, Zone-1 recorded 1,994 potholes and Zone-2 reported 1,303. Of these, officials say 1,907 potholes in Zone-1 and 1,242 in Zone-2 have already been attended to, signalling that repair teams have been active but large-scale restoration is still needed.
The distribution of works reflects the gap in road conditions. Zone-1 will take up 85 projects, while Zone-2 will handle 24. Among the wards, Byatarayanapura, Sarvagnanagara, and Pulikeshnagara account for most proposals, followed by Hebbal, Yelahanka, and Dasarahalli. The planned works include fresh asphalting, strengthening weakened corridors, fixing culverts, and restoring inner roads that link residential blocks, schools, shops, and local markets.

Officials acknowledged that the core problem behind recurring potholes is the persistently poor quality of road construction. They pointed out that the same set of contractors continue to win projects despite earlier substandard work. To break this pattern, authorities have asked the government to revise project costs upward, hoping that higher-value contracts will draw more competent contractors and result in durable roads.
