BMRCL floated first Phase 3 tenders (18.581 km, Rs 4,187.41 cr). Work may start June; aim May 2031, expanding Namma Metro to 222 km via ORR/Magadi corridors

Bengaluru’s Namma Metro has taken the first major step towards Phase 3 by floating its initial set of tenders, a move that officials say will help expand the city’s rail network to 222 km by 2031. Phase 3 is planned as a 44.45-km project with two corridors and seven interchange stations aimed at improving cross-city connectivity through key junctions on the Outer Ring Road and Magadi Road.

On Tuesday, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) invited open e-tenders for three civil packages covering 18.581 km, with an estimated combined cost of Rs 4,187.41 crore. The scope of work includes building metro viaducts, rail-cum-road flyovers and stations. Interested bidders can submit bids until February 25, and the bids are scheduled to be opened two days later.

After evaluation and finalisation, BMRCL expects groundwork to begin in June, while the targeted completion date for Phase 3 is May 2031. The project comprises Corridor 1, a 32.3-km line from JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura along the Outer Ring Road, and Corridor 2, a 12.15-km line from Hosahalli to Kadabagere along Magadi Road.

A defining feature of Phase 3 is the proposed double-decker infrastructure along large stretches. Corridor 1 includes a 28.486-km double-decker section from Delmia Circle to Hebbal, described as the city’s longest flyover, while Corridor 2 features an 8.635-km double-decker stretch from KHB Colony to Kadabagere.

BMRCL plans to tender the entire Phase 3 work in eight packages—six for the Outer Ring Road section and two for the Magadi Road line. The remaining five packages are expected to be tendered in March or April after a loan agreement is signed with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which will provide Rs 6,775 crore for the project. While the metro component is estimated at Rs 15,611 crore, the double-decker portion—Rs 9,692.33 crore—is to be fully funded by the state government.
