As part of Phase 3 of the Namma Metro project, construction of a new metro line from JP Nagar 4th Phase to Hebbal Kempapura will necessitate the removal of 1,092 trees, with official clearance from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) now in place.
The 44.65 km stretch, which includes two primary routes, will see trees being cleared for Corridor 1 (JP Nagar 4th Phase to Hebbal Kempapura) and Corridor 2 (Hosahalli to Kadabagere). The Detailed Project Report (DPR) originally estimated that over 11,000 trees could be affected by the project. However, only trees that directly block the metro line and station construction will be removed, while others will be relocated.

Thousands of trees already cut down
This decision comes amid growing concerns over the loss of Bengaluru’s green cover, with thousands of trees already cut down for various infrastructure developments, including flyovers and road widening projects.
The project, which aims to alleviate severe traffic congestion along the Outer Ring Road, is set to ease commuter mobility in the city. The Rs. 15,617 crore metro expansion is progressing, with land acquisition underway and a double-decker structure planned for 37.121 km of the route.
In line with environmental mitigation efforts, the BMRCL will replant ten saplings for every tree cut or relocated. The planting process is being monitored by the Karnataka High Court to ensure compliance.
