  • Motorised boats banned to protect ecosystems
  • Plan may expand to 100 lakes

GBA’s eco-friendly boating plan aims to boost tourism and generate funds for lake maintenance, with non-motorised boats chosen to protect fragile ecosystems.

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has prepared a major plan to introduce boating facilities in 10 prominent lakes across the city, marking a fresh push to promote eco-tourism and strengthen lake conservation efforts.

As part of the initiative, only pedal boats will be permitted, while motorised boats will remain banned to safeguard aquatic life and maintain the natural balance of the lakes. The decision reflects a strong focus on environmental protection alongside public recreation.

The lakes selected for the first phase of the project are Ulsoor, Kaggadasapura, Nayandahalli, Sankey, Yelahanka, Rachenahalli, Vengaiah, Rampura, Begur, and Madiwala. These water bodies have been chosen based on accessibility, visitor footfall, and their potential to support controlled recreational activities.

The boating service will be rolled out by the Karnataka tourism department in coordination with the Karnataka Tank Conservation and Development Authority. The project is designed not only to provide a new leisure option for residents and visitors but also to generate a steady revenue stream. The funds collected through boating activities will be directed toward lake maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, safety measures, and ecological restoration.

Based on the public response and operational success, the initiative could be expanded to nearly 100 lakes across Bengaluru in future phases. This larger rollout aims to transform urban lakes into well-managed public spaces while ensuring their long-term sustainability.
