Modus Operandi
According to recent reports, certain pubs and restaurants in Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, and Gurugram are allegedly collaborating with women hired to lure men into extravagant outings. The pattern is straightforward: the women, often college students or those posing on dating apps, approach men under the guise of friendship or romance. Once trust is built, they suggest meeting at upscale pubs or restaurants.
Inside, the evening quickly spirals. Drinks and food are ordered liberally, with the bill mounting unnoticed as the men are encouraged to keep up. By the time the outing ends, the men are confronted with an astronomical bill. Refusing to pay often leads to threats from staff or bouncers, forcing them to settle the amount immediately—sometimes by emptying wallets, using credit cards, or even borrowing from friends.
Police sources in multiple cities confirm they have received complaints from victims who realized only later that the entire experience was staged. “The girls often receive commissions from the restaurants for ensuring big bills,” one investigator said.
The pub scam appears to be particularly aimed at IT professionals, businessmen, and affluent youth frequenting hi-end establishments. Victims describe feeling humiliated and trapped, unable to challenge the inflated bills without risking confrontation or public embarrassment.
Authorities are now warning men to remain cautious when meeting strangers, especially through dating apps. Experts suggest avoiding unfamiliar venues recommended by new acquaintances and keeping a close eye on orders placed during the evening.
What may appear as a casual night out can quickly turn into a financial nightmare. Men are being advised: think twice before following someone new into a high-end restaurant.
