Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao directs preparation of DPR and tenders to redevelop Shivajinagar’s iconic Russell Market with modern facilities while retaining its heritage value.
The redevelopment of Shivajinagar’s historic Russell Market has moved a step forward, with Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao instructing officials to initiate the tender process for its renovation. The direction came after Maheshwar Rao conducted an on-site inspection of the market, which comes under the Central City Municipal Corporation limits.
Russell Market is one of Bengaluru’s prominent heritage structures and a major commercial hub in Shivajinagar. Following the inspection, the GBA Chief Commissioner asked officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) outlining the redevelopment plan. The objective is to give the traditional market a modern upgrade while preserving its historical identity and ensuring it remains vibrant, sustainable and citizen-friendly.

As part of the plan, the market will be temporarily shifted to enable smooth execution of the redevelopment works. Officials said this move is necessary to carry out structural upgrades and install new civic facilities without disrupting long-term operations.
The proposed redevelopment focuses on strengthening basic infrastructure and improving public convenience. Plans include the installation of a proper drainage system, creation of organised parking facilities, and measures to prevent rainwater stagnation within the market premises. To maintain cleanliness, authorities plan to introduce a comprehensive waste segregation system along with composting facilities.
Fire safety systems will be upgraded in line with current safety norms, and new public toilets will be constructed to improve sanitation for traders and visitors. Pedestrian pathways inside the market will be upgraded with granite flooring to ensure durability and smoother movement. The redevelopment plan also includes a clock tower-style design element to enhance the market’s architectural appeal.
