South Bengaluru has taken the lead in Bengaluru’s clean energy transition, with 1,170 households generating 6.29 MW of electricity under the PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar scheme. This contribution makes the region the city’s strongest performer in solar adoption, where families are not only meeting their own energy needs but also selling surplus power to the grid, reducing dependency on conventional sources and earning additional income.

Solar adoption across Bengaluru
Across Bengaluru, 4,476 households have joined the initiative, together producing close to 20 MW of renewable energy. The southern part of the city stands out due to larger rooftops, early adoption, and strong awareness of long-term benefits. Residents benefit from up to 300 units of free power every month, with many turning into small-scale energy suppliers.
West Bengaluru follows with 906 households generating 3.86 MW, despite limited space. Compact homes have successfully integrated rooftop panels, proving that solar adoption is not restricted to larger properties. North Bengaluru contributes 692 households with 3.02 MW, showcasing middle-class participation, while East Bengaluru records 619 households producing 2.87 MW. Central Bengaluru, with its high-density housing, adds 319 households generating 1.45 MW, often through shared rooftops.
The scheme, launched in February 2024, offers subsidies of up to ₹78,000 per household, with installations ranging between 1 kW and 4 kW. So far, BESCOM has released ₹30.96 crore to support adoption. With rising electricity costs and a savings horizon extending over 25 years, Bengaluru is steadily building a reputation as a hub for solar energy innovation.
