Timely Namma 112 alert stops child marriage in Bengaluru

A child marriage attempt in Bengaluru’s Kodichikkanahalli was stopped after a citizen alerted Namma 112. Police rushed to the spot, found the girl was 17, counseled families, and prevented the ceremony.

Swift action by Namma 112 staff and Hoysala police prevented a child marriage in Kodichikkanahalli, Bommanahalli limits, after an alert citizen reported the incident on Thursday.

A planned child marriage was successfully prevented in Kodichikkanahalli, Roopena Agrahara, within the Bommanahalli police station limits, following timely intervention by Namma 112 staff and city police.

According to police officials, the incident came to light on Thursday when an alert member of the public noticed preparations for a child marriage and immediately contacted Namma 112, the state’s emergency response system.

Upon receiving the information, the Namma 112 team quickly passed on the details to Hoysala-209 patrolling personnel. Acting without delay, Assistant Sub-Inspector Suresh and Head Constable Umesh Nagannavar, who were on patrol duty, rushed to the location.

After reaching the spot, the police verified the identities and ages of the individuals involved. During verification, they found that the girl was 17 years old, while the boy was 18 years old, making the marriage illegal under Indian law.

The officers immediately stopped the ceremony and held discussions with the parents and family members of both sides. They clearly explained the provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, highlighting the legal consequences of conducting or supporting a child marriage.

Police officials said the families were counseled about the importance of following the law and protecting the rights and future of minors. After the counseling session, the families agreed to halt the marriage.

In a press note, the Office of the Commissioner of Police confirmed that due to the coordinated efforts of Namma 112 staff and the patrolling police team, the child marriage was successfully prevented.
