Animal Welfare Board member Arun Prasad has strongly opposed the government’s move to ban feeding pigeons in public places, saying the order spreads fear and violates the rights of birds to survive.

The government’s decision to ban feeding pigeons in public places has triggered sharp opposition from animal lovers and welfare groups. Arun Prasad, a member of the Animal Welfare Board, has openly criticised the order, calling it unfair, incorrect, and lacking scientific basis.

Speaking to NewsFirst against the move, Arun Prasad questioned the rationale behind issuing such a sweeping order. He said a government decision should not be taken merely because someone wrote a letter, especially when it directly affects animals and people who care for them.

He rejected claims that pigeons pose serious health threats. According to him, pigeons do not spread any life-threatening diseases, nor do they cause illnesses that put human lives at risk. He alleged that people are being unnecessarily frightened by exaggerating health concerns related to pigeons.

Arun Prasad also raised ethical concerns, asking whether only humans have the right to live on Earth. He stressed that animals and birds have equal rights to survive and share public spaces. He pointed out that those opposing pigeon feeding do not feed the birds themselves but want to stop others who are willing to care for them.

Strongly demanding immediate action, he urged the government to withdraw the order without delay. He emphasised that restricting compassion towards birds sends a wrong message and undermines animal welfare values. The Animal Welfare Board, he said, stands firmly against the ban and supports people who feed pigeons responsibly.
