Public shocked as Nagawara Lake dries up overnight; authorities say closure is temporary for desilting and lake revival

Bengaluru’s historic and popular tourist spot, Lumbini Garden, located beside the well-known Nagawara Lake, has been temporarily closed, leaving visitors and residents surprised and concerned. The sudden closure and complete draining of lake water over the past few days have sparked confusion among the public.

Local residents said water was present in the lake just six days ago, but it has now been entirely emptied. Many were shocked to see the lake bed exposed and the garden shut without prior public information. Several residents recalled that the park was earlier closed during the COVID-19 period and later remained shut for nearly six years, making the current closure particularly disappointing.

“This place used to be a favourite spot for families and children. We came here for recreation and play. Seeing it closed again is upsetting,” said a local resident. Others said they were unaware of the reason behind the closure and expressed concern about the sudden draining of water.

Clarifying the situation, officials from the Garden City of Bengaluru Authority (GBA) stated that the lake has been intentionally drained to carry out desilting and rejuvenation works. According to them, comprehensive development activities will be undertaken at Lumbini Garden for a period of around 15 days.

As part of the project, silt accumulated at the bottom of the lake is being removed, while the inflow and outflow systems are being improved to enhance water circulation. The authorities have planned a complete makeover of the lake to restore its ecological balance and improve visitor experience.

The total cost of the development and restoration work is estimated at ₹18 crore. Due to these works, the entire lake water has been released to facilitate cleaning and structural improvements.

Officials assured that the lake and garden would reopen once the rejuvenation work is completed, offering a refreshed look and better facilities. Until then, public entry will remain restricted for safety reasons.
