  • Vehicle and population growth are major congestion factors
  • Police prioritising free movement over excessive violations
  • Public transport use key to easing traffic pressure

Seemanth Kumar Singh says traffic police are ensuring smooth movement despite population growth, rising vehicles, and ongoing Metro and development works.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh has responded to reports highlighting Bengaluru as one of the most congested cities globally, stating that the city is facing heavy pressure due to rapid population growth and a sharp rise in vehicle numbers. Despite these challenges, he said the traffic police are working efficiently to manage movement on city roads.

The Commissioner said traffic personnel have been clearly instructed to prioritise free flow of vehicles and avoid unnecessary disruptions. Only violation cases that directly obstruct traffic are being booked, with the focus firmly on keeping vehicles in continuous motion. He stressed that smooth and uninterrupted movement during peak morning and evening hours is a key objective of traffic management.

Singh pointed out that Bengaluru is undergoing rapid development, which has contributed to congestion. Large-scale infrastructure projects, including Metro construction and other development works, are occupying road space and affecting traffic flow. Along with this, the increasing number of private vehicles has added further strain to the existing road network.

Highlighting the long-term solution, the Police Commissioner said the public must increasingly rely on public transport to reduce pressure on roads. He noted that while he has not yet examined the congestion survey details in full, the police department is well aware of the city’s ground realities.

He added that Bengaluru’s Traffic Management Centre is highly advanced and plays a crucial role in monitoring and regulating traffic conditions across the city. Singh assured that the survey findings will be carefully studied and considered in future planning. He also acknowledged that travel time in Bengaluru has increased, underlining the need for continued and focused traffic management efforts.
