A simple ritual to ward off the evil eye turned into a violent confrontation in Avalahalli, leaving a couple injured and two counter-complaints filed.

A long-standing superstition triggered a violent clash in Avalahalli on Mysuru Road when a woman and her husband were allegedly attacked by their neighbours for performing a traditional ritual involving an egg.

The incident took place between 10 am and 10:30 am on November 11, when Geeta Shankar, 51, threw an egg at a three-way junction near her home. According to her, this act was part of a local custom meant to “ward off the evil eye” after her six-month-old granddaughter had fallen at home earlier that morning.

As Geeta returned home with the infant, her neighbour Hanumantayya B confronted her, accusing her of performing black magic. Despite Geeta explaining that it was only a ritual, an angry Hanumantayya allegedly took off his slippers and hit her.

When her husband Shankar rushed to intervene, Hanumantayya and another family member reportedly assaulted him as well. Geeta suffered a cut on her forehead and was bleeding, while Shankar also sustained injuries. Both were treated at a nearby clinic before filing a police complaint against the neighbours.

However, the dispute escalated further when Hanumantayya filed a counter-complaint, alleging that Geeta frequently breaks eggs in front of his house and practices black magic, causing him and his family distress.

Police have taken up both complaints and are investigating the exact sequence of events to determine further action.
