  • Fourth trainset to join Yellow Line services by mid-September
  • Bogie delays from China threaten future trainset production
  • MP Tejasvi Surya urges urgent airfreight to avoid long delays

BMRCL begins mainline testing of a new trainset for Bengaluru’s Yellow Line, aiming to reduce long waits and ease peak-hour congestion. However, bogie supply delays from China may affect future train deliveries.

Commuters on Namma Metro’s Yellow Line, often waiting up to 25 minutes for a train, may soon see smoother travel. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has started mainline testing of a fourth trainset, received last month, and expects to induct it into service by the second week of September.

Currently, only three trains run along the 19-km stretch, carrying over 60,000 passengers daily, with overcrowding a daily ordeal. Shortage of trains has also delayed Yellow Line operations, which begin at 6:30 am instead of 5 am like the Purple and Green Lines.

A fifth trainset is expected by mid-September, but further additions face hurdles. Delays in motorised bogies sourced from China have stalled production of the sixth trainset and beyond. To address this, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya urged BMRCL and the state government to consider airfreighting bogies instead of sea shipment, which would otherwise delay delivery by 30–45 days.

Surya added that timely supply could allow Titagarh Rail Systems to deliver up to eight trains by September-end, significantly improving services and reducing commuter distress.
