In a significant step towards enhancing road safety and reducing congestion, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated a comprehensive redesign of 75 major traffic junctions across the city. The project, titled Suraksha Mission – 75 Junctions, is being revived after a prolonged delay and will be rolled out across all eight BBMP zones with an allocated budget of ₹100 crore.

Originally announced in the 2023–24 State Budget and launched in March 2023, the initiative faced a lengthy stall but has now gained momentum with tenders finalized and contractors assigned. Junctions were chosen based on high traffic volumes and accident data, compiled with inputs from Bengaluru’s traffic police.

The project aims to upgrade road geometry, streamline vehicle flow, and improve pedestrian safety. Narrow lanes, broken footpaths, and unsafe crossings will be replaced by wider, well-marked lanes, pedestrian ramps, and organized walkways. Drainage systems will also be overhauled to prevent flooding and silt accumulation.

Aesthetic enhancements form a core part of the redesign. Tree-lined rest zones with stone benches, ornamental plants, fountains, and decorative landscaping are planned, alongside improved lighting and signage. The initiative also includes installing bollards, clear lane markings, crosswalk upgrades, and reflective cat-eyes to ensure visibility and safety.

With physical work expected to commence shortly, Bengaluru’s commuters can anticipate a long-overdue transformation at key crossroads, promising both safety improvements and a more pleasant urban experience.
