As Bengaluru faces scorching summer temperatures, gig workers — including delivery executives, ride-hailing drivers, and freelance service providers — are experiencing severe hardships. These workers, who power the city’s gig economy, lack the job security and benefits of traditional employment, leaving them particularly vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.

With long hours spent outdoors, many gig workers battle exhaustion, dehydration, and heat-related illnesses. However, financial pressures force them to keep working, as taking a break means losing daily income. Unlike salaried employees, they have no paid leave or employer-provided health coverage, making it difficult to cope with rising temperatures.
Worker advocates and labor groups are calling for urgent interventions to safeguard gig workers. Proposed measures include mandated rest breaks, access to hydration stations, and heat protection policies. Additionally, some cities are exploring subsidies for electric vehicles and affordable insurance schemes to provide relief.
As climate change intensifies, the well-being of Bengaluru’s gig workforce is becoming a growing concern. Addressing their struggles requires collaboration between government authorities, platform companies, and the community to ensure fair and safe working conditions. Without proper support, these workers—who play a crucial role in keeping the city running—will continue to bear the worst of extreme weather.
