  • Part of BIAL’s ₹16,500 crore expansion, easing traffic by 30%

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) is set to become more accessible with the construction of the Eastern Connectivity Tunnel, a project aimed at reducing travel times by 30 minutes for commuters from the city’s eastern areas such as Whitefield, Sarjapur, and Mahadevapura.

The tunnel will bypass the heavily congested Hebbal flyover, offering a direct and efficient alternative route for airport-bound traffic from the eastern state highway. By diverting nearly 30 percent of traffic, the project is expected to ease congestion and enhance traffic flow across the city.

The initiative forms part of a ₹16,500 crore expansion plan by the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) to meet the demands of the city’s growing aviation sector. Construction of the tunnel is set to begin this year, with completion expected within three years.

In addition to the tunnel, other expansion projects at KIA include the development of Terminal 3, two metro stations, and taxiway upgrades to accommodate an anticipated 85 million annual passengers by 2030-32.

Separately, the Karnataka government announced plans for an underground tunnel road project in Bengaluru, expected to begin by mid-2025. This initiative aims to address the city’s chronic traffic woes, providing a long-term solution to its vehicular congestion challenges.
