Bengaluru's iconic Kempegowda (Majestic) Bus Stand is set for a major transformation under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, announced Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy. Speaking on the redevelopment plans, he traced the history of the terminal, stating that its foundation was laid during Devaraj Urs’ tenure as Chief Minister and later inaugurated under Gundu Rao’s leadership. “It has taken about 45 years, and now it’s time for a complete overhaul,” he said.

Massive Transit Volume Demands Modern Infrastructure

Spread across 40 acres, the Majestic area houses both KSRTC and BMTC terminals, serving as the nerve centre of Bengaluru's public transport. Over 13,000 bus trips originate from here daily—10,000 by BMTC and 3,000 by KSRTC. “With the Metro and railway station adjacent, this is the only location where all major modes of transport converge. It needs major surgery,” Reddy stated.

PPP Model to Power Development, No Burden on State

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced the modernization in the state budget. As per the plan, the government will not incur any expenditure as the project will be executed under the PPP model. The Transport Department has already invited tenders for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR). “Once the DPR is ready, it will go to the Cabinet for approval,” the minister added.

Integrated Transit Hub with Commercial Infrastructure

The project will include the demolition of old buildings and the construction of new bus depots, workshops, terminals, and offices. The plan also envisions commercial shops and upgraded passenger facilities. “We are planning in a way that traffic flow will not be affected during redevelopment,” said Reddy. The Transport Head Office will also be revamped at a cost of ₹120 crore.

The Majestic revamp promises to transform Bengaluru’s central transit hub into a state-of-the-art, high-tech facility.
