Bengaluru’s Namma Metro is undergoing rapid expansion as part of India’s ambitious plan to add another 1,000 km to its metro network. With the country recently surpassing the 1,000 km milestone, Bengaluru’s metro system is playing a key role in the next phase of growth.

Currently spanning 76 km, Bengaluru’s metro network is one of the largest in India after Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. However, with the city’s ever-increasing traffic congestion, the need for expansion has become urgent. Multiple extensions are under construction, with key corridors like the Yellow Line and the much-anticipated Blue Line expected to ease connectivity. Once completed, these additions will significantly enhance the city’s transport efficiency. publive-image

Compared to other metro systems in India, Bengaluru has seen relatively steady progress, outpacing cities like Jaipur (11 km) and Agra (7 km) but still trailing behind Mumbai (59 km) and Hyderabad (69 km). The Delhi Metro, currently over 390 km, continues to lead with further extensions planned.

India’s Metro Rail Policy of 2017 has accelerated urban mobility projects across the country, mandating cities to develop Comprehensive Mobility Plans. As Bengaluru moves forward with its metro expansion, it remains a critical player in India’s goal to double its metro network and become the world’s second-largest metro system.
