  • Rs 400 crore allocated for planning and development

Bengaluru is preparing for a major road infrastructure overhaul as Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Ltd (B.SMILE) initiates plans to upgrade a crucial 22-km segment of the Outer Ring Road (ORR), stretching from Silk Board Junction to Baiyappanahalli. This stretch, which faces heavy traffic congestion daily, is now set to receive modernised features that align with international urban transport standards.

B.SMILE, a newly established agency responsible for managing large-scale city infrastructure projects, has been entrusted with this ambitious upgrade. To begin, it will appoint a private consultancy firm to provide technical guidance, design solutions, and draft layout plans for both the main road and its service lanes.

The initiative is backed by a Rs 400 crore budget allocation made by the BBMP in its latest financial plan, specifically earmarked for this section of the ORR. The goal is to reduce traffic bottlenecks while improving safety and efficiency for all commuters.

The design phase, expected to conclude within a few months, will assess several components of road use. These include dedicated bus lanes, improved signage, pedestrian bridges, non-motorised transport infrastructure, new bus bays, traffic calming features, and redesigned junctions with possible one-way systems.
