Bengaluru’s popular post-meal indulgence, paan, has become a costlier affair as vendors across the city have raised prices. The surge is attributed to the rising cost of betel leaves, a key ingredient, alongside increased prices of other components.

The price of a bundle of locally grown betel leaves has nearly doubled, now ranging between ₹160 and ₹200, while premium-quality leaves have soared to ₹1,000 and the highest-grade varieties have reached ₹2,000 per bundle. Additionally, the cost of gulkand has risen from ₹80 to ₹120 for a 200-gram pack, and copra prices have increased from ₹20 to ₹25 per 100 grams.

Vendors cite multiple factors behind the price hike, including the wedding season and Ramzan, which have driven up demand. To manage costs, some have started using a single betel leaf instead of the usual two. Despite the increase, demand remains steady, with some vendors implementing a 10% price hike.

Bengaluru primarily sources its betel leaves from Bangarpet, Malur, and Kolar taluks. However, hot weather in Kolar has disrupted production, leading to reduced supply and higher prices. With local sources struggling to meet demand, vendors are now sourcing leaves from Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Odisha.

Market arrivals in Bangarpet have significantly declined, and with no immediate relief in sight, further price hikes are expected.
