Bengaluru’s historic Russel Market in Shivajinagar, a commercial hub since the 1920s, is set for a transformative Rs 40-crore redevelopment under modern green building standards. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has called for proposals to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project, aiming to modernize and restore the market’s heritage.

Known for its variety of goods, including vegetables, fruits, flowers, meat, and fish, the market has faced challenges such as overcrowding, poor infrastructure, and the aftermath of a devastating fire in 2012. The redevelopment will address these issues with upgraded waste management, efficient space utilization, parking for 70-80 vehicles, escalators, and energy-efficient systems.
Temporary relocation plans for traders are in discussion to facilitate construction.
With nearly 475 shops across two floors, the market has seen a decline in occupancy since the pandemic, which forced many shop owners to vacate. Originally built in 1927 by British firm Dorman Long, the market's colonial architecture retains its old-world charm, attracting visitors and traders alike.
The project promises to revive this iconic site, blending historical preservation with modern amenities to meet contemporary needs.
