  • Bescom is developing a portal-based system for automatic electricity meter name transfer using property IDs
  • The initiative targets simplifying a process that currently involves bureaucracy and hidden costs
  • Awareness campaigns and coordination with BBMP are key to its successful rollout

In a move set to ease the process for thousands of electricity consumers in Bengaluru, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) is preparing to introduce an automated name change feature on its online portal. This integration, being developed in partnership with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), will allow users to transfer electricity meter ownership to their names simply by entering their property ID.

Currently, a large number of apartment residents have their electricity meters registered under the names of builders or landowners. Until now, transferring ownership has been a cumbersome process, often requiring multiple visits to sub-division offices, document uploads, or even bribes to intermediaries. With the introduction of schemes like Gruha Jyothi and the digitalisation of property records through BBMP’s E-Khata, more citizens have become aware of the importance of having the meter in their name.

Bescom officials stated that several subdivisions are already receiving numerous applications daily, prompting the development of a seamless online system. Once implemented, the system will automatically fetch property details from BBMP and trigger the name transfer without requiring extensive documentation.
Despite an existing online process, poor awareness and unclear guidelines have made many consumers resort to unofficial means. The new system aims to remove these barriers and make the service truly consumer-friendly.Apartment associations have also highlighted issues with transferring names for common area meters, often discovered only during solar panel installations or other utility upgrades.

The automatic trigger system is currently under development and will be rolled out once coordination with BBMP is finalized.
