Ratan Tata, who passed away in October last year, has long been a popular choice for the Bharat Ratna due to his immense contributions to India’s industrial growth. Following his demise, public demand for the honour has intensified. The Maharashtra cabinet has formally recommended his name to the central government.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26, is also a strong candidate. Calls for his recognition have come from across the political spectrum, including Congress leaders and NDA allies. The central government recently announced plans to build a memorial in Delhi in his honour, increasing speculation about his inclusion.

Other names in contention include Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder NT Rama Rao, whose candidacy has been championed by Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, and Dalit leader Kanshi Ram, backed by BSP supremo Mayawati.

Reports suggest four individuals may receive the award this year. Last year, five were honoured, including PV Narasimha Rao, LK Advani, and MS Swaminathan. Additionally, names like Veer Savarkar, Savitribai Phule, and BP Mandal are being discussed, highlighting a diverse field of potential recipients. The official announcement is eagerly awaited.
