Bharat Ratna LK Advani: Here’s a sneak peek into his life

Even as senior BJP leader LK Advani is conferred the Bharat Ratna, let’s have a sneak peek into his life. 

He was born on November 8, 1927 in Karachi. 

His schooling took place at St. Patrick's High School, Karachi, and at D.G. National College, Hyderabad, Sindh.

During India’s partition, he and his family migrated to India and settled in Bombay. It was here that he graduated from Government Law College of Bombay University.

The RSS years 

It was in 1941 that LK Advani joined the RSS. He was just 14 then. He involved himself thoroughly in its activities as he became a full-time worker by conducting shakhas. Still in Karachi, he became its secretary.  

1971-75: Rajya Sabha member 

Advani walked into the Rajya Sabha from Delhi

1976-80

LK Advani became the minister for information and broadcasting under PM Morarji Desai. After his government fell in 1980, he became the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha. 

1981- 89

It is here that he played a pivotal role in the formation of the Bharatiya Janata Party. 

1990-97

Again, he played a pivotal role in the rise of the BJP as he undertook the Rath Yatra. It was during this period that the Babri Masjid fell. 

1998-2004 

Under Prime Minister AB Vajpayee, he was also the home minister and the Deputy Prime Minister.
