Biden recommends Dr Vivek Murthy of Karnataka origin as U.S Representative in WHO

The President of the United States of America (USA) Joe Biden has decided to appoint a doctor whose origins can be traced to Karnataka to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Dr.Vivek Murthy who is serving as a Surgeon General might be the representative from the USA in WHO. 

The American Parliament has sent a proposal to this effect to the Senate. A similar proposal was made in October 2022. However clearance from the Executive Committee of the WHO was pending. This has prompted a second such request from the USA. 

In 2021, Dr Vivek murthy became the 21st Surgeon General of the USA. He was also the 19th Surgeon General under Barack Obama’s administration. The Surgeon General is responsible for preparing a well-rounded health policy for the country. He was also the Vice Admiral of the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. More than 6000 Health Administrators fall under the ambit of this organisation and they were working under DR Vivek Murthy. 

His origins can be traced to the Hallegere village in the Hassan district of Karnataka. Vivek was 3 years old when his family shifted to the Miami state in the USA. He studied in the Yale School of Medicine and the Yale School of Management. He is currently a renowned doctor, scientist and entrepreneur. He resides in Washington with his wife Alice Chen and 2 kids.
