Bilingual dictionary launched to bridge language gap in Karnataka schools

In a significant move to address the multilingual challenges in Karnataka’s government schools, Bal Raksha Bharat, in collaboration with DSERT-Karnataka, has developed a curriculum-based bilingual dictionary. Designed for grades I-V and VI-VIII, the resource aims to enhance language proficiency and help young learners navigate the complexities of multilingual environments.

Government schools in Karnataka, often attended by children from migrant families with diverse linguistic backgrounds, face challenges in delivering quality education. These children struggle to grasp the regional language or English medium instruction. The new bilingual dictionary, available in Kannada and English, simplifies learning by providing key words and their comprehension across subjects, including mathematics, science, and social studies.

The project involved over 50 subject experts and teachers working for two years. The dictionary integrates child-centric pedagogical methods and includes illustrations for better understanding. Covering age groups 6-14, it eliminates the need for separate subject-specific dictionaries, offering a comprehensive solution for marginalized students.

Post-pilot, the dictionary will be rolled out to all Karnataka government schools, with plans to integrate it into 400 institutions under the PM Schools for Rising India (PMSHRI) program by March 2025.
