Donations to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surged by 87% in 2023-2024, reaching ₹3,967.14 crore, according to the party’s annual audit report for 2023-2024, recently published by the Election Commission of India. However, while the BJP’s total contributions rose, the share of income from electoral bonds dropped. The party received ₹1,685.62 crore in electoral bonds, which made up 43% of its total income, down from 61% in the previous fiscal year.

The BJP’s spending on campaigns and propaganda also saw a significant increase, with the total campaign expenditure rising to ₹1,754.06 crore in 2023-2024, up from ₹1,092.15 crore the year before. A large portion, ₹591.39 crore, was spent on advertisements and publicity, attributed to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Meanwhile, Congress reported a dramatic 320% rise in donations, increasing from ₹268.62 crore in 2022-2023 to ₹1,129.66 crore in 2023-2024. Electoral bonds comprised 73% of Congress’s total donations, reaching ₹828.36 crore, up from ₹171.02 crore the previous year. The Congress party also saw a sharp rise in election spending, with expenses climbing to ₹619.67 crore from ₹192.55 crore.
Both parties have seen a substantial increase in funds as they prepare for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with Congress showing a higher growth rate in donations.
