Amid a steep fare hike of up to 71%, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has introduced user fees for public toilets at 12 metro stations, sparking criticism from both passengers and staff representatives.

These toilets are situated outside the paid zones, meaning anyone, not just Metro commuters can access them. The management of these facilities has been handed over to Sulabh International, which will now charge Rs 2 for urinals and Rs 5 for toilets. This move affects key stations like Jayanagar, Banashankari, Cubbon Park, and the Majestic Railway Station, among others.

According to BMRCL, the goal is to improve cleanliness and upkeep, especially since these toilets are frequently used by the general public. Toilets inside the paid Metro areas remain free of cost for all ticketed passengers.

Despite the explanation, many are unhappy with the timing and justification of the charges. A representative from the BMRCL Employees’ Union criticized the decision, arguing that the focus should be on addressing internal inefficiencies and mismanagement before imposing new costs on the public.
