Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is ramping up efforts to boost cashless ticketing, targeting Rs 1 crore in daily revenue from UPI-based payments. This move aims to increase digital transactions, reducing conflicts between passengers and conductors over cash change issues.

Currently, around 40 lakh people use BMTC buses daily, generating Rs 4-5 crore in revenue. However, the share of online payments has been relatively low. Following a push from BMTC officials, the corporation recorded Rs 3.04 crore in digital transactions on January 21 across all departments.
Though UPI-based ticketing was initially available only in air-conditioned airport buses, it has now been expanded across BMTC’s fleet of 6,300 buses. QR codes have been installed, and conductors have been trained to promote digital payments. Previously, network issues and long wait times hindered adoption, but BMTC has taken steps to address these concerns.
After a recent fare hike, QR codes were deployed across all buses to encourage cashless transactions. The corporation is also working to enhance the UPI system on high-traffic routes, including airport and IT corridors. Plans are underway to introduce Electronic Ticket Machines (ETMs) to streamline ticket issuance further.
BMTC’s revenue from online payments has steadily increased, rising from Rs 9.39 crore in August 2024 to Rs 10.14 crore by December. The shift to digital payments has resolved cash-handling issues, ensuring a smoother commute for passengers.
