Bengaluru is advancing inclusive mobility with the expansion of 'OnBoard', a smart assistive technology aimed at supporting visually impaired commuters. The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), in collaboration with technology firm Continental, has scaled up the deployment of the system to over 100 city buses, following a successful pilot in 2023.

Initially implemented in 25 buses under Continental’s CSR program, the OnBoard technology enables visually impaired passengers to identify bus route numbers and door locations through audio cues broadcast from onboard speakers. This enhancement significantly improves the accessibility and independence of visually challenged commuters.
Developed by IIT Delhi and facilitated by the Raised Lines Foundation, a non-profit incubated at the institute, the technology is currently active on BMTC routes 401K and 401R. Plans are underway to install the system in 400 additional buses by mid-July, with a full rollout across 500 buses targeted for completion by August 2025.
The formal launch was held recently, where state officials observed a live demonstration of the system in action. The initiative underscores BMTC’s commitment to inclusive urban transport and highlights the role of technological innovation in empowering differently abled communities.
This multi-stakeholder effort positions Bengaluru as one of the first Indian cities to integrate assistive technology at such a scale within its public transport network, setting a progressive benchmark for urban mobility nationwide.
