Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has begun trial operations of air-conditioned (AC) electric buses, marking a significant step in upgrading its fleet. Five buses are currently running between Kempegowda Bus Station and Kadugodi (Whitefield) as part of the initial phase.

The new AC e-buses, supplied by Ohm Global Mobility, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland, aim to replace aging Volvo buses on Vajra and Vayu Vajra routes, serving Bengaluru’s tech corridors and Kempegowda International Airport. This initiative represents BMTC’s first deployment of AC electric buses, complementing its existing fleet of 1,269 non-AC electric buses from Tata Motors, Switch Mobility, and JBM-NTPC.
Under a Gross Cost Contract model, BMTC will pay Rs 65.80 per kilometer for the AC e-buses. Ohm Global Mobility will oversee bus operations, maintenance, driver deployment, and charging infrastructure, while BMTC will provide conductors. Each bus is expected to operate for 225 kilometers daily over 350 days annually for 12 years.
Despite initial plans to deliver the first prototype by June 2024, delays have postponed the arrival of the full fleet to March 2025. The total contract includes 320 buses, which will significantly enhance Bengaluru’s public transport network by offering more comfortable and sustainable travel options.
BMTC’s move reflects a broader push towards eco-friendly urban mobility in India.
