Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is undertaking a major overhaul of its bus interiors to improve safety and accessibility, especially for women. The move follows the implementation of the Shakti scheme, which has significantly increased the number of women using public buses. Of the 40 lakh daily BMTC passengers, over 23 lakh are women.

A key focus is on redesigning grab handles to make them easier to reach, particularly for shorter passengers and those carrying bags. Plans are also in place to introduce ultra low-floor buses, simplifying boarding for women, children, and the elderly.

To enhance security, new buses are being fitted with pneumatic doors that feature external access buttons—especially useful at overcrowded stops. BMTC has also installed over 5,000 CCTV cameras across its fleet, with all newer electric and BS-VI buses equipped with surveillance systems.

Efforts are underway to upgrade the grievance redressal mechanism. Although the Namma BMTC app includes an SOS feature, delays in emergency response have raised concerns. BMTC is considering faster options like WhatsApp-based support.

Meanwhile, infrastructure gaps remain, with only 1,400 of 9,000 bus shelters electrified and poor maintenance at key transit hubs like Shantinagar TTMC.
