In a landmark judgment, the Mumbai sessions court sentenced Parvez Tak to death on Friday for the brutal murder of Bollywood actor Laila Khan, her mother Selina, and four siblings in 2011. The court found Tak guilty on May 9 of murder and destruction of evidence.

Judge SB Pawar ruled that the case fell under the “rarest of rare” category, justifying the death penalty for Tak on the charge of murder. Additionally, the court imposed a seven-year rigorous imprisonment for the destruction of evidence, along with a fine of ₹10,000.

The gruesome murders took place at the family’s bungalow in Igatpuri, Maharashtra, in February 2011. Tak first killed his wife Selina following an argument over her properties, then proceeded to murder Laila and her four siblings. The prosecution argued that Tak felt mistreated by Selina’s family and feared abandonment in India as they planned to relocate to Dubai.

The murders were uncovered months later when Tak was arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir police for other criminal activities. The victims’ decomposed bodies were discovered at a farmhouse in Igatpuri, belonging to Laila Khan’s family.

Public prosecutor Pankaj Chavan, who examined 40 witnesses, sought the death penalty, describing the killings as premeditated and heinous. Despite Tak’s plea for leniency, citing familial responsibilities, Judge Pawar emphasized that the court had already granted substantial time for Tak to discuss his arguments with his lawyer.

The sentencing marks a significant moment in the pursuit of justice for Laila Khan and her family, underscoring the judiciary’s commitment to addressing heinous crimes with appropriate severity.
