Bombay HC directs CBFC to decide on Emergency
It has set September 25 as the final date
Movie Emergency has been directed by and stars Ranaut
The Bombay High Court has directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to take a final decision on the release of Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency by September 25. The order was issued by a bench of Justices Burgess Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla during a hearing on Thursday.

The court was addressing a plea by Zee Studios, seeking certification for the film’s release. Previously, on September 4, the court had ordered the CBFC to review the objections raised by the Jabalpur Sikh Sangat regarding the movie. A decision was expected by September 18, but the film board referred the matter to its revising committee, delaying the process.
The bench criticized the CBFC for the delay, stating, “Whatever they want to do, they have to take a decision by the said date. You take a decision. Have the courage to say that the film should not be released.”
Emergency, directed by and starring Ranaut, has faced opposition due to its controversial portrayal of historical events. The film depicts India’s 1975 Emergency period, during which then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of Emergency, restricting civil liberties. The court emphasized that a clear stand on the film’s release is needed and expressed readiness to address any decision made by the CBFC.
